Language
Armenians speak the Armenian language, which, together with its Amshen dialect, constitutes a separate branch of the Indo-European language family. The writing system exists since the early 5th century (uses its own alphabet, probably based on the Aramaic written system).
Ethnic groups
A separate group is the Hemshinli, or Amshen Armenians, originating from the city of Amshen, subject to Byzantium, in the Pontic mountains. They speak the Amshen dialect. The islamized Hemshinli are usually considered to constitute a separate people.

A large ethnolocal group is constituted by the Don Armenians who live on the territory of the current Rostov region since 1779.
