In home construction, especially in the villages, the details of the traditional building art are used: the earthquake-proof wooden frame, the covered terrace, the niches in the house walls for bedding, dishes and other utensils. The Uzbeks had various regional schools of architecture. The most independent and original of those were the Fergana school, the Bukhara school, the Khiva one, the Shakhrisabz one and the Samarkand one. Their originality was expressed in construction, building methods, planning, etc.
The Uzbek food consists of many different plant, dairy and meat products. An important place in the diet is occupied by bread made from wheat flour, sometimes from corn and other types of flour in the form of various scones (obi-non, patir and others). The readymade baked goods are popular, including the dessert ones. The assortment of dishes is very diverse. Such dishes as noodles, soups and gruels from rice (shavlya) and legumes (mashkichiri) are seasoned with oil or butter, sour milk, red and black pepper, various herbs (fennel, parsley, coriander, raikhan (basil), etc.). The dairy products are very diverse — qatiq, kaimak, sour cream, curd, suzma, pishlok (dried clot of curd flakes from heating qatiq or curdled milk), qurt, etc. The meat used is mutton, beef, poultry (chicken, etc.), less often horse meat. Such products popular in other regions as fish, mushrooms and others take up a relatively insignificant place in the Uzbek diet.
The favorite dish is pilaf. An important part of the diet are vegetables, fruit, grapes, watermelons, melons, various nuts (most of all walnuts and peanuts). The main drink is tea, most often the green one.
The Uzbeks were traditionally involved in crafts and trade.
