Turkmens are a Turkic-language people that form the majority of the population of Turkmenistan.
Language
The Turkmenian language belongs to the Oghuz subgroup of the Turkic languages. The Turkmenian language, like other languages of Central Asian states – former USSR republics has achieved the form of a proper language with all its attributes including the written standard only after the formation of the Turkmenian SSR within USSR.
Dispersion
In Russia, the majority of Turkmens lives in the Stavropol territory (13.9 thousands), the Astrakhan region (2.2 thousands) and Moscow (3.5 thousand).
Traditional occupations
Agriculture and cattle-breeding.
Food
The basis of the Turkmenian cuisine is formed by meat dishes. In different regions of the republic mutton, camel meat, the meat of mountain goats, partridges or pheasants are used. Traditionally the Turkmens use almost no beef.
