They speak the Latvian language (the Baltic branch of the Indo-European family).
Dwellings
The traditional dwelling is a log house (izba) with an open hearth.
Clothes
Women universally wore white woolen veils fastened together with several sakts, special brooches. People ascribed magical power to decorations and used them in family rituals. The decorations pointed out people’s specific tribal, kinship, regional, social or borrowed origins (a wife wore her husband’s signs).
Traditional occupations
The crafts were: smithing, pottery, weaving, knitting, wickerwork.
