The Vietnamese (Viets) are one of the Viet-Muong peoples and the majority of the population of Vietnam.
Language
Today’s Viets speak the Vietnamese language.
Dispersion
The majority of the Vietnamese live in Moscow, Bashkortostan, the Moscow region, the Tula region and the Khabarovsk territory.
Traditional occupations
Their main traditional occupation is plough wet rice growing. The crafts are weaving, embroidery, wickerwork (baskets, bags, furniture, hats), wood carving, stone carving, ivory carving, horn carving, lacquer painting, jewelry.
Dwellings
Their dwelling is frame-based, aboveground and tricameral. The main place in the home is the altar of the forefathers. The interior includes plank beds, coffers to store the household possessions, mats and hammocks. Tableware manufactured out of bamboo, coconut shells, etc., is typical.
Clothes
The traditional male and female clothing is a straight-fastened jacket and trousers of a dark brown (in the north) or black (in the south) color. The female festive costume ao dai is a fitted robe dress wrapping to the right with a stand-up collar and very wide trousers of light silk with embroidery. A male ao dai is not fitted and has a freer cut. They wear conical hats woven from palm leaves (nonla).
Food
The main food sources of the Viets are rice, vegetables and fish. The widespread dishes include rice noodle soup (fo), boon noodles, mien noodles, rice pancakes with meat fillings (nem); traditional drinks are tea and rice vodka.
