They speak the Gagauz language (the Turkic branch of the Altai family). The modern Gagauz writing system is based on the Latin alphabet. After the loss of its ancient writing system, until mid-20th century the Gagauz language had no writing; only in 1957, a new alphabet on the basis of the Russian script was created.
Dispersion
The Gagauz people mostly live in the Tyumen region, the Khanty-Mansi Autonomous District - Yugra, the Yamal-Nenets Autonomous District, the Moscow region and in Moscow.
Clothes
Women wore linen shirts, sleeveless dress with an apron, a big black headscarf (chem’ber’) over a thin white headscarf (moda). In winter they put on a dress with sleeves, a jacket made out of a woolen cloth and a fur vest. Earrings, bracelets and beads were obligatory, including a necklace from golden coins (lift). Men’s clothing consisted of a shirt, wide woolen trousers, a wide red belt (sash), a hat in summer, an astrakhan fur hat (kalpak) in winter. Shepherds combined an ordinary shirt with trousers made of sheepskin (meshin) with furry side in; fur vest and a short sheepskin jacket (kyurk), sometimes decorated with a red or green stitch.
Food
Bread always held an important place in the Gagauz diet. Pies are very popular, especially those with brynza cheese, as well as sauces and aspic.
