They speak the
Akhvakh language, which belongs to the Andi subgroup of the Avar-Ando-Tsezic
group of the Nakh-Dagestan language family. It is divided into two dialects,
the northern one and the southern one. The Akhvakhs also widely use the Avar,
Russian, Azerbaijani and Kumyk languages. In writing they use the Avar
language.
Dispersion
The Akhvakhs live in the northwestern part of
Dagestan in the villages Izano, Tad-Magitl, Tsvakilkolo, Kvankero, Kudiyabroso,
Lologonitl (the Akhvakh district) and in the villages Dagbash, Tlyanub, Tsekob,
Ratlub, Khuchada (the Shamil district). Many Akhvakh settlers live in the
Kizilyurt, Khasavyurt, Babayurt and Kizlyar districts. The city dwelling
Akhvakhs live in the cities: Makhachkala, Buynaksk, Kizlyar, Khasavyurt,
Kizilyurt.
