The Karata people are an ethnic group of the Avars.
Language
They speak the
Karata language, which belongs to the Andi subgroup of the Avar-Ando-Tsezic
group of the Nakh-Dagestan language family. It is closest to the Akhvakh
language. The Karata language is divided into two dialects – the Karata one and
the Tokida one. Also widespread among the Karata people are the Avar and
Russian languages, in places the Chechen language.
Dispersion
In the Akhvakh region of Dagestan, Karata people
live in the villages Karata, Anchikh, Tsumali, Archo, Lower Inkhelo, Upper
Inkhelo, Mashtada, Ratsitl, Rachabulda and Tukita. In the Botlikh region, they
live in the Lower Inkhelo village. In the Khasavyurt region, the Karata people
live in the villages Siukh, Tukita, Anchikh-kutan (Anduz, Indira,
Gavriil-kutan), Kirpich-Kutan, partly in Kokrek and Mutsalaul.
