The Persians are an Iranian people, the main
population of Iran.
Language
They speak the Persian language (Farsi) (the
Iranian branch of the Indo-European family).
Traditional occupations
Cattle breeding, plough agriculture,
horticulture, kitchen gardening. The developed crafts are carpetmaking, manual
weaving and punchwork.
Dwellings
The dwellings
are wattle and daub, the roof is made from reeds. The construction uses wood
and bricks. The houses have a blind wall looking out into the street, and
inside there is a closed yard. Rich people have a garden and a pool in their
yard. Sometimes there is a veranda (ayvan) set up in the yard. The inner
premises divide into the male (birun)
and female (enderun) halves. In
everyday life, low padded furniture, carpets and mats are used. Kitchenware,
utensils and possessions are stored in niches. For heating, fireplaces, ovens
and braziers are used.
Clothes
The male
national costume consists of a white shirt, black trousers, a vest and a caftan
(kaba). Well-to-do people wear a frock coat (serdari). The
footwear has a knitted top, the sole is made from compressed rags. The
countryside costume includes a white shirt, blue trousers, a blue caftan or a
sheepskin coat. The headgear is a felt hat (kulakh) or a cap (arakchin)
over which a turban is wrapped. Women wear a shirt, trousers, a jacket and a
skirt. They always wear a yashmak (hijab). Their face is covered with a
white veil. The Persian name for trousers (sharovari, shelvar) entered
many languages of the world.
Food
The food includes rice, meat, marinades, scones, sheep cheese, dairy products,
fruit syrups.
