The Botlikh people are an ethnic
group of the Avars.
Language
They speak the Botlikh language. The
Avar and Russian languages are also widespread. The writing system is based on
the Russian Cyrillic alphabet.
Dispersion
The majority lives in the villages
Botlikh, Miarso, Ankho, Ansalta and Ashino of the Botlikh district and the
Batlakhatli village of the Tsumada district of Dagestan. The city-dwelling
Botlikh people live in the cities of Makhachkala, Khasavyurt, Kizilyurt and
Buynaksk.
Traditional occupations
The traditional
occupations of the Botlikh people are horticulture with artificial irrigation
(apricots, peaches, plums, peats, apples, walnuts), grape growing, some terrace
plough agriculture (wheat, rye, barley, oats, millet; as for technical
cultures, hemp and linen) with cattle breeding playing a subsidiary role. Wool
spinning and weaving, wool felting, tanning, making papakha hats and
footwear were widespread crafts.
Clothes
National clothes are of a
common Dagestanian type. The characteristic female headgear is a horned chukhta.
The male costume included a tunic-style shirt, trousers, a beshmet, a chokha,
sheepskin coats, a burka cloak, a papakha hat. Footwear was made
from rawhide, felt, wood and leather. Women wore undershirts, trousers, waisted
dresses, headgear and headscarves.
Food
The traditional food
includes dishes made from the products of agriculture and cattle breeding,
fruit, nuts, vegetables, wild herbs. Popular dishes are khinkal and pies
with curd filling.
