The Mongols are a group of related
peoples originally inhabiting the northeast of Mongolia.
Language
They speak the Mongolian language (the
Mongolian branch of the Altai family). It is often called Khalkha-Mongolian or
just Khalkhas language after its main dialect. The Khalkha-Mongolian language
has a standard form and the state language status in Mongolia. The Khalkhas
dialect belongs to the central group of the dialects of the Mongolian language.
There are also the eastern and the western groups of dialects. The differences
between the dialects are mostly of a phonetic character. Since 1943, its
writing system is based on the Cyrillic alphabet.
Ethnic groups
The Mongolian peoples include the following ethnic
groups: Khalkha-Mongols, Barguts, Buryats, Oirats (Kalmyks), Southern Mongols
(Chakhars, Khorchins, Kharachins, Arukhorchins, Tumets, Djalayts, Avga,
Avganars, Baarins, Chipchins, Mu-Myangats, Naymans, Aokhane, Onnyuts,
Durben-Khukhets, Urats, Gorlos, Ordos, Khongirats, Djaruts, Uzumchins,
Heshigtens, Khuchits).
