The Hungarians (self-designation Magyar) are a
European people of Ugric origin, the main population of Hungary.
Language
They speak a language belonging to the
Finno-Ugric branch of the Ural family, which includes a significant number of dialects.
Traditional occupations
The former traditional industry of the
Hungarians was the agriculture, in which cattle breeding played the leading
role. The traditional crafts are linen and hemp processing, embroidery,
lacemaking, weaving, pottery, tanning and currying.
Dwellings
In the past, dwellings with
mud walls, with reed walls covered with clay or with wooden walls were
constructed; nowadays stone and bricks are used.
Clothes
Traditional clothes are
diverse. Women wore a gathered skirt, often several skirts, a short shirt with
wide sleeves, a vest; when out among people, headgear was obligatory, a bonnet,
a headscarf. Men wore shirts, vests and trousers, a fur hat, a straw hat. A
woolen cloth coat of a simple cut (guba) or an embroidered cloak (syur)
with a traditional ornament were typical. Nowadays these types of clothing have
been driven out by city clothes.
Food
The Hungarians eat a lot of meat, vegetables
(cabbage, tomatoes), dough-based dishes (noodles, dumplings); they use spicy
seasonings, black and red pepper and onions. The most famous dish is the goulash,
there is also the pörkölt, which is stewed meat in tomato sauce, paprikash
– stewed chicken with red pepper, lecho – vegetables with tomato sauce.
Coffee is popular.
