The Talysh are an ancient people of
the Southern Caucasus.
Language
They speak the Talysh language (the Iranian
branch of the Indo-European family).
Dwellings
In the old times the Talysh who inhabited
mountain areas lived in stone houses with flat roofs. The Talysh from the shore
areas lived in wattle and daub dwellings with roofs made from reeds and sedge
grass. The most widespread type of dwelling was a log house without a
foundation (andjinaka), the walls of which were daubed with clay from
the inside and the outside. It was heated with an open hearth without a funnel
(gara bukhary) or with a fireplace (bukhary); in the 20th
century, iron ovens became widespread. Inside the yard, a seasonal dwelling was
set up, raised high on brick or wooden pillars (lyam); this was a place
for rest and night sleep of the family from May to October. The doors in a
traditional Talysh house are very tall, up to the ceiling, so that the smoke
from the hearth could go out of them.
Clothes
The traditional costume (both
male and female) is similar to the Azerbaijani one. Men wore shirts, trousers, arkhalyg,
a papakha hat or a felt hat; women wore shirts, wide long trousers, wide
gathered skirts, arkhalyg and headscarves. They wore woolen socks and
leather shoes.
Food
Instead of bread, they used hard boiled rice.
