The Japanese are the main population of Japan.
Presumably the Japanese language belongs to the Buyeo group of the Altai language family together with the modern Korean language and the Buyeo (ancient Korean) languages, which is noticeable by the characteristic grammar structure of the language. However, because of the compositional heterogeneity of the ancient population of the islands and the significant cultural influence of China, the Japanese language has borrowed a lot (mostly in its vocabulary) from languages not related to this group (mostly the Austronesian languages and the Chinese adstrat), as the result of which, a mixed language was formed, which is at the first glance difficult to classify as belonging to some particular group or family.
The traditional household industries are plough and irrigational rice growing. The Japanese also grow tea, vegetables and citrus fruit, silkworm breeding and fishing are developed. Popular crafts are making dolls from wood or paper, weaving baskets, vases and fans. Such particular types of art as origami (folding figures from paper) and ikebana (flower arranging) are very characteristic.
The villages have linear planning. The traditional house is frame- and pillar-based and usually has 1 or 2 storeys. It typically has operable walls made from frames covered with waxed paper or cardboard. The floor is elevated on small piles. It is almost completely covered by mats. Tables, chairs and armchairs are only put in the living rooms. The tables are low, the Japanese usually sit on their knees on bolsters. There are no beds; they sleep on a mat and put not a pillow but a board under their heads. The house is necessarily decorated with a kind of pictures which can have an image, a drawing or an inscription (a saying or a quote) on them. These are called kakemono.
The national Japanese clothes are called kimono: this is the general type of outer clothes for both men and women. The main nagagi kimono is put over the juban undershirt, adjusted by length and fixed with a narrow sash over which the large decorative obi belt is tied. On the feet, white tabi socks with a separate big toe are worn. The summer everyday kimono without lining is called yukata. There are two types of footwear: zori sandals, made from straw, leather, rubber, etc, and geta wooden footwear on two supports. Currently the Japanese wear European clothes in their everyday life. You can see the kimono during the New Year celebration, the Coming of Age day and Japanese weddings. The women’s kimono differs from the men’s by the cut of the sleeves. Women’s sleeves serve as a kind of pockets.
