Their language is the Cuban
version of the Spanish language which belongs to the Roman group.
Traditional occupations
They grow sugar cane, rice and
tobacco.
Dwellings
2/3 of the population are city
dwellers. The original planning of the cities is of Spanish type. The Baroque
style predominated in the architecture. Since the 20th century, blocks of flats
started to be built. The peasant home (bono) is pillar-based, the walls
are made from palm planks and the roof has two or four sloping surfaces and is
made from palm leaves. The floor is from dirt, before the entrance there is a
sunshade on pillars. The old forms of the dwelling are being replaced.
Clothes
The city clothes are of the
Southern European type. The peasant costume consists of a loose shirt worn
outside trousers, trousers, a wide-brimmed straw hat, for women a chintz skirt,
a blouse, a colorful shawl draped over the shoulders.
Food
The basis of their diet
are dishes made from rice and kidney beans which are cooked separately and
together. Some examples are: moros y cristianos – rice with black kidney
beans, ajiaco – a thick soup with meat, corn, vegetables, herbs and
spices. On the seashore fish, scallops, turtles, crabs and other seafood are
widely used for food.
