Godoberi
The Godoberi are an ethnic group of the Avars.
Language
They speak the Godoberi language which belongs to the Andic sub-branch of the Avar-Ando-Tsezic branch of the Nakh-Dagestan language family. The Avar and Russian languages are also widespread, as well as the Chechen language to some extent. The writing system is in the Avar language based on the Russian script. There are two dialects: Godoberi and Zibirkhali.
Dispersion
They live in the villages Upper and Lower Godoberi, Zibirkhali and Beledi of the Botlikh district and in the Terechnoye settlement of the Khasavyurt district of Dagestan. Many Godoberi also live in other villages of the Khasavyurt, Kizilyurt and Babayurt districts of Dagestan.
Society
The basis of the traditional social organization is the village community, the tukhum patriarchal kinship unions were also very significant.
Traditional occupations
The traditional occupations of the Godoberi are plough agriculture (wheat, barley, millet, later corn) and cattle breeding. Horticulture, grape growing, hunting and beekeeping played important roles. Home production and crafts included weaving, processing leather, wool, metals, wood and stone, making felt. The main modern occupations are agriculture, cattle breeding, horticulture, subsidiary occupation is beekeeping.
Dwellings
The traditional dwelling is made from stone, wood (lately also from adobe), mostly one-storey, square in plan and frame- and pillar-based; currently houses of the modern type are in use.
Clothes
The basis of the male costume consists of tunic-style shirts, trousers, beshmet jackets, chokhas, papakha tall hats, sheepskin overcoats of various shapes, burka cloaks. They wore belts, cartridge belts sewn on and daggers. The traditional footwear was of several types, from rawhide, morocco leather, felt, etc. The female clothing complex included a shirt dress, a waisted dress, trousers, headgear (decorated by silver coins, sewn-on rings), a headscarf and leather boots with felt bootlegs and turned-up toes.
Food
In the traditional diet, dairy dishes (cheese, curd, sour milk, buttermilk) prevail; meat dishes (sausage, internal fat, fatty tail) are widespread, as well as flour, plant and vegetable (pumpkin) dishes; the most widespread is khinkal with or without meat, with seasoning.
