Meadow-Eastern
Mari is the
generalized name of the ethnic group of the Mari including the historically
formed ethnic groups of Meadow Mari and Eastern Mari. Their self-definition is
Mari or Mariy (from “man” or “human” in the Mari language).
Language
The Mari language, which belongs to
the Volga-Finnish group of the Finno-Ugric languages, includes the Mountain,
Meadow, Eastern and Northwestern dialects. The use of the Russian language is
also common. The writing system was created based on the Cyrillic script.
Dispersion
The Meadow-Eastern Mari live in the Republic of
Bashkortostan (in the northern and western parts of the Republic, the majority
in four districts: Birsk, Krasnokamsk, Kaltasy and Mishkino). There are many
Mari in the Kirov and Sverdlovsk regions, in Tatarstan, in Udmurtia, in the
Nizhny Novgorod region, in the Khanty-Mansi Autonomous District, in the
Volgograd region and the Perm territory.
