Setos (also Seto, Pskov Chud,
Poluvertsy) are a small-numbered Finno-Ugric ethnic group.
Language
The Setos speak the Võro dialect of
the Estonian language which they consider to be an independent language. The
writing system is based on the Latin alphabet.
Dispersion
The Setos live in the Pechora
district of the Pskov region as well as in the Khaidak village of the
Krasnoyarsk region.
Dwellings
Typical for the
Setos house construction is the Pskov-type closed yard with a high gate; later
the bicameral (and afterwards also multicameral) houses with a glazed-in
veranda. The Setos settlers also brought this type of dwelling to Siberia.
Clothes
The traditional Setos
folk costume was signficantly different from the costume of the other groups of
Estonians and included elements of Russian costume. Women wore long-sleeved
shirts with slant-wedge sarafan, men wore Russian kosovorotka shirts. An abundance of knitted articles (socks, gloves, mittens) with
two-colored (white and brown) geometrical ornament is typical.
