The Chamalals or Chamalins are an ethnic group
of the Avars.
Language
They speak the Chamalin language of the
Nakh-Dagestan family. The Chamalin language is divided into two dialects, the
Gakvarin and the Gigatlin.
Dispersion
They live in the Republic of Dagestan and the Republic of Chechnya.
Clothes
Men’s clothes consist of
a shirt, trousers, an unbuttoned beshmet jacket, a chokha, a sheepskin
fur coat, a vest and a jacket, a burka felt cloak. Conical sheepskin papakha
hats are used as headgear. The footwear consists of rawhide charyk
boots, felt boots, knitted woolen socks. Female clothes consist of a shirt, a
dark dress belted with a long brightly colored fabric sash, trousers and a
sheepskin coat. The headgear worn was chukhto, a bonnet covering the
head, and a hairpouch sewn to it and hanging down the back. Over the chukhto,
a headscarf from homemade woolen cloth was worn. The men’s decorations were
belts, daggers and cartridge belts sewn to the chokha, women used
forehead chains from silver or copper sewn to the chukhto, rings,
earrings, neck chains, pendants, beads, copper and silver coins.
