Yekaterinburg is the administrative center of the Ural Federal District and the Sverdlovsk Region. During the war years Yekaterinburg (until 1991 - Sverdlovsk) became the largest center of the defense industry of the Soviet Union. Local factories launched the production of T-34 and T-60 tanks, self-propelled artillery mounts, armored hulls for various combat vehicles, tank engines, towers of a KV heavy tank, anti-aircraft guns and anti-tank guns, and “Katyusha “rocket launchers. Light industry enterprises supplied the Red Army with soldiers' uniforms, footwear and food. For selfless labor activity during the war years, more than 12 thousand townspeople were awarded orders and medals, 26 industrial enterprises were awarded government awards. In addition, Sverdlovsk became a city where a unique collection of the Hermitage was kept during the war. In 1947, in gratitude for the preservation of the collection, the city received more than 200 saved items.
