Chelyabinsk is the administrative center of the Chelyabinsk region. After the Great Patriotic War beginning, Chelyabinsk became an important industrial center: 200 enterprises were transferred to the city and 35 more were built from scratch. For 33 days, serial production of T-34 tanks was launched in Chelyabinsk. In 1941-1945 the city produced about 18 thousand tanks and self-propelled units (one fifth of all tanks produced during the war years), more than 48 thousand tank engines, for which it received the unofficial name "Tankograd". Plant named after Kolyuschenko put the BM-13 installations - the famous “Katyusha” - on stream. During the war years, the city's enterprises also produced electrical equipment for military vehicles, parts for tanks and cars, armored glass for aircraft and other products necessary for the front.
