Baikal-Amur Mainline modernization has been underway since the early 2000s in order to increase cargo traffic. In 2003, Severomuisky tunnel was put into operation, which allowed heavy freight trains to move non-stop along the BAM (such trains had to be uncoupled and moved through a bypass in parts before its opening).
