Kostroma is the administrative center of the Kostroma region. In the first months of the Great Patriotic War, many industrial enterprises from the western part of the USSR were transferred to the city, and all city factories and plants were moved to the production of military products. Kostroma enterprises supplied shells, mines, equipment for the tank industry, tarpaulins, shoes, bandages and much more. For their labor successes, 115 work collectives of Kostroma were awarded the title of front-line shock brigades. About 400 workers were awarded orders and medals for labor valor during the war. Also, one of the main directions in helping the front was the care for the wounded and the reception of the evacuated population. Ten hospitals were deployed in the city, where about 50 thousand soldiers and officers were treated. Over 70% of them again joined the ranks of the Red Army. 98 orphanages and 17 boarding schools were opened to accommodate evacuees, including children from besieged Leningrad.
