Monchegorsk is the city in the Murmansk region. In the early days of the Great Patriotic War, Monchegorsk “Severonikel” plant, which produced 40% of the country's nickel and up to 70% of cobalt, became the attractive target for the enemy, so on June 26, 1941, it was decided to stop production, dismantle the equipment as soon as possible and begin evacuation. Despite this, the plant did not stop its activities, but rebuilt itself to produce ammunition and equipment. Workshops set up the production of the M-50 product, made mines for mortars. At the same time, cars were repaired; experiments were carried out on the manufacture of fuses for grenades. In 1945, “Severonikel” was awarded the Red Banner of the State Defense Committee. The plant was awarded this highest wartime labor award 14 times. Overcoats, mittens were sewn for the army; sheepskin coats and felt boots were repaired in “Monchegorsk Artel Worker” industrial cartel. There were five evacuation hospitals in the city, which served the 14th army fought in the Arctic.
