There are 30 titles for 2020 in the UNESCO World Heritage List in the
Russian Federation. 19 objects are included in the list by cultural criteria,
and 6 of them are recognized as a masterpiece of human genius (criterion i),
and 11 objects are included by natural criteria, 4 of them recognized as
natural phenomena of exceptional beauty and aesthetic importance (criterion vii).
In 2015, Russia ranked the 9th place in the world in terms of the
total number of the World Heritage properties, and the 4th (after China, the
United States and Australia) in terms of the number of natural objects. In
addition, as of 2015, 24 sites (not counting three re-nominated) in Russia are
among the candidates for inclusion in the World Heritage List. The Union of
Soviet Socialist Republics, the legal successor of which is Russia, ratified
the Convention for the Protection of the World Cultural and Natural Heritage on
October 12, 1988. The first objects located on the territory of Russia were
listed in 1990 at the 14th session of the UNESCO World Heritage Committee.
