Administrative-territorial division of the Russian Federation
According to the Constitution of the Russian Federation
of 1993, Russian Federation is a federative state made up of republics, territories,
regions, cities of federal importance, an autonomous region and autonomous
areas, all of which are equal members of the Russian Federation. Nowadays, the Russian
Federation consists of 89 constituent entities, among which there are 24
republics, 9 territories, 48 regions, 3 cities of federal importance, 1
autonomous region and 4 autonomous areas.
In each federal constituent entity, there are not only bodies of state authority, but also its own local legislative, executive and judicial authorities. Federal constituent entities have their own constitution or charter, as well as their own legislation adopted by local parliaments.
