Russia is located in the northern part of Eurasia and occupies about a third of its territory (31.5 %). The continent’s northern and eastern extreme
points are also extreme points of Russia. Russia's territory expands over two parts
of the world and occupies the eastern part of Europe and the northern part of
Asia. Russia borders three oceans: the Atlantic Ocean, the Arctic Ocean and the
Pacific Ocean. The boundary between Europe and Asia is marked along the Ural
Mountains and the Kuma–Manych Depression. Just over
one-fifth of the Russian territory belongs to Europe (about 22 %). However, the whole territory to the west of the Ural
Mountains is often regarded as the European part of Russia (about 23 % of the
country’s area). In any case, more than three quarters of Russia’s territory lies
in Asia. Wrangel Island and the Chukotka Peninsula lie astride the 180th meridian,
which means that the easternmost point of Russia is situated in the Western
Hemisphere. The geographical center of Russia is Lake Vivi located in Evenkia,
a district within the Krasnoyarsk Territory. The geographical midpoint of Asia is
calculated to be near the town of Kyzyl in Tyva Republic. The Russian Federation
is the largest country in the world. With its total area of 17,075,400 square
kilometers, Russia occupies one-eighth of the Earth’s land area.
