Main mineral deposits on the territory of the Russian Federation
South Yakutia coal basin
Located in the Neryungri district of the Republic of Yakutia (Sakha). The total basin area is 25 thousand km2. It comprises 5 coal-bearing areas: Aldan-Chulman, Usmon, Ytymdzhinsky, Gonamskiy and Tokiyskiy. As of 2010, of all the known deposits of the basin, only the Neryungrinsky coal deposit is under active development. In the near future, it is planned to develop the Elginskoye field, which is Russia’s largest. Production is only carried out by the open method, i.e. with the use of cuts (quarries), with no mines built.
