They speak the Estonian language belonging to the Baltic-Finnish subgroup of the Finno-Ugric group of the Ural family.
Dispersion
On the territory of the Russian Federation, Estonians live in the Krasnoyarsk territory, Omsk region, Saint Petersburg, Leningrad and Novosibirsk regions, Moscow.
Traditional occupations
Traditionally they practiced plough agriculture, grew rye, barley, linen and legumes. They bred large cattle, horses, pigs and sheep.
Food
Their diet includes rye bread (leyb), barley and corn porridges, soups, turnips, rutabaga, cabbage, potatoes, fish, lapped milk, salted and cured pork, mutton, beef, curd cheese, herb and fruit seasonings, kvass- or birch juice-based okroshka soup, kvass (kali, taar), beer (ylu). For festive occasions, pure rye or wheat bread (sepik) was baked, blood- or grits-filled sausages were made as well as broth jelly (syult, yakhelikha).
