Dolgans are a Turkic people in
Russia, the native population of Taymyr. In 2000, they were given the status of
native small-numbered people.
Language
The Dolgan language belongs to the
Turkic group of the Altai language family. It is close to the Yakut language,
from which it was separated in the process of isolated development. It was
influenced by the Evenki language.
Dispersion
The Dolgans live on Taymyr, in the
Krasnoyarsk territory, mostly in the Khatanga district and on the territory
subject to the Dudinsk municipal council. They also live in Yakutia (the Anabar
district and the city of Yakutsk).
Traditional occupations
Reindeer breeding and hunting, in
some regions fishing.
Dwellings
The dwellings of the Dolgans are
varied: the Russian izba, the Yakut balagan, the Tungus chum,
golomo. The reindeer breeding Dolgans use as a mobile dwelling a
sled-based chum-balok, a frame-based dwelling covered by reindeer skins
and put onto a reindeer sled.
Food
The basis of the traditional diet is the reindeer
meat, raw, frozen and cooked. Fish is eaten raw and slightly salted, or frozen
(in slices), as well as cooked and fried. They make soup from poultry or
reindeer meat, adding flour or grits. They also eat onions, roots of some
plants, berries, scones and flapjacks.
