The Meskhetian Turks are a subethnic
group of Turks originating in the Meskhetian region in the southwest of
Georgia.
Language
The Meskhetian
Turks speak one of the Eastern Anatolian dialects of the Turkish language. Up
to 85% of Meskhetian Turks are fluent in Russian.
Dispersion
They live in Kabardino-Balkaria
(Urvan district, Prokhladny, Chegem district, Nalchik), the Rostov region
(Salsk, Veselovsky district, Volgodonsk), the Krasnodar territory (Krymsk
district), the Belgorod, Voronezh, Smolensk regions, the Stavropol territory.
Traditional occupations
Their traditional occupations were
farming, gardening, melon growing, cattle breeding. They grew wheat, barley,
corn, linen, lentils, kidney beans and millet, potatoes, onions, garlic, pepper
(pimpila), tomatoes (patlyzhan), eggplants (gara patlydzhan),
cucumbers, cabbage (lakhana), beetroot (jargala), carrots (porchyukli,
zerde), rutabaga (shalgam), mint (gezyum). They kept large
and small cattle. As for the crafts, jewelry, sewing, carpentry and smithing
were well-developed.
Food
The diet includes the dishes of the Turkish,
Georgian and Uzbek cuisine, including mutton, butter, yoghurt, cream, cheese, ayran, gurud, deleme.
