The Taz are an ethnic group. Their
self-designations are Ude, Udehe. In 2000, the Taz were given the status of
native small-numbered people.
Language
They speak the Udege language which
belongs to the Amur group of the Tungus-Manchu branch of the Altai language
family. The Taz people used to speak a dialect of Chinese using a lot of
borrowing from the Udege and Nanay languages. Today the Taz people on the
territory of Russia consider Russian to be their native language.
Dispersion
The majority of the Ude live in the
Primorsky territory (the upper reaches of the river Ussuri and the Olginsky
district of the Primorsky territory).
Society
Since the end of the 19th century,
nuclear families (parents with children) of up to eight people have prevailed.
Traditional occupations
The annual economy cycle of the Taz
people combined hunting with fishing and foraging. They hunted for fur and
meat; the Taz also procured panty, the young unossified antlers of the
Far Eastern red deer.
Dwellings
The traditional dwellings were
fairly diverse: wooden huts with two sloping surfaces, chums,
semi-dugouts of various forms, loghouses on piles.
Food
The Taz cook many dishes
traditional for North China: steamed pampushka fritters (steam-cooked
dough), boudkhe (pasties with meat filling cooked in the similar way), lantsey
(dishes from meat and straw potatoes) and dumplings.
