Inspired by the Byzantine and Novgorod traditions, the Pskov school of architecture reached its peak in the 15th and 16th centuries. and was one of the foremost schools in the country. It influenced the evolution of Russian architecture over five centuries.
The UNESCO list includes 12 sites located in Pskov:
—The Pokrovskaya Tower of the Okolny town of the Pskov Fortress (built by the Pskov bricklayers in the late 15th and early 16th centuries, repeatedly renovated in the 17th century);
—The Throwing Tower of the Okolnoy City (Pskov’s highest stone tower);
- Ensemble of the Pskov Kremlin - Trinity Cathedral with a bell tower;
—Conostas of the Trinity Cathedral;
—Spaso-Preobrazhensky Cathedral of the Spaso-Mirozhsky Monastery (XII century);
- The Church of Archangel Michael with a bell tower (XIV century);
—The Church of the Intercession and Nativity of the Virgin from the Prolom (the Intercession of the Prolom, the Intercession in the Corner, 15th-16th centuries);
—Church of Sts. George from the Importation (1494);
—The Church of the Epiphany with a bell tower (1489);
—The Church of Nikola with Usoha (XVI century);
- Church of the Old Ascension (XV century);
- Basil's Church on the Hill (Church of St. Basil the Great, XV century).
Another architectural object, although included in the group of monuments of the Pskov architectural school, is geographically located far from Pskov. Church of the Life-Giving Trinity in s. Behovo, Zaoksky district, Tula region was built in 1904-1906. according to the sketches of the Russian artist V. D. Polenov, who embodied in his project an ideal model of Pskov architecture. The artist managed to combine ancient principles with modern architectural elements.
