The city of federal importance Sevastopol has been a constituent
entity of Russian Federation since March 18, 2014. The city which was founded in
1783 is located on the southwestern region of the Crimean Peninsula on the
Black Sea. There are over thirty bays in the city. The largest industries in Sevastopol are machine
building (shipbuilding and ship repairing), woodworking industry, food
industry. The city is an international sea port
with two ports which handle passenger ships. Sevastopol is home to the Russian
Black Sea Fleet. During World War II, Sevastopol fought fiercely against
the Germans for 250 days and was awarded the title of the ‘Hero City’ in 1965.
There are over 2,000 important archeological, historical and architectural
sites in the region. The city’s main places of interest
are Malakhov Kurgan where the Battle of Malakoff took place during the Crimean
War, and the well-preserved ruins of the ancient Greek port city of
Chersonesos, which are now part of the National Preserve of Tauric Chersonesos.
