The Republic of Daghestan is
a constituent entity of the Russian Federation making part of the North
Caucasus Federal District. It is located in the eastern part of Caucasus and is
bordered on its eastern side by the Caspian Sea.The capital of the republic is Makhachkala,
founded in 1844. The economy relies on the rich deposits of oil, gas, bituminous
coal, ferrous, nonferrous and rare metals. The republic is a well-known resort rich
in mineral springs, therapeutic muds and sandy beaches on the shore of the
Caspian Sea. Daghestan is famous for its handicrafts, including carpentry, jewelry
pottery and metalsmithing. The largest industries in Daghestan are food
industry, light industry, fuel industry, machine building and metalworking, electric
power industry. Local industries are represented by fruit farming, cattle
farming involving raising livestock for meat and dairy products. Significant
importance is given to sheep breeding. Daghestan is rich in natural monuments, including Samur Forest, Russia's only subtropical
liana forest in the Samur River Delta, the Sulak Canyon, Lake Kezenoyam, the
largest mountain lake in the Caucasus Mountains, and the Aymakinskoye Ravine.
