The Kabardino-Balkarian Republic is a constituent entity of the Russian Federation making part of the North
Caucasus Federal District. It is located in the south of European Russia. The capital of the
republic is Nalchik, founded in 1822. The republic is richly endowed in terms of
oil, bituminous coal, tungsten-molybdenum
ores, lead and lead-zinc ores, gold, tin, bentonite
clays, raw materials needed for the production of construction materials. The
largest industries in the Kabardino-Balkarian Republic are food industry, machine
building and metalworking, production of construction materials. Agricultural
sector specializes in the cultivation of cereal and industrial crops and cattle
farming involving raising livestock for meat and dairy products. Local
industries are represented by livestock horse breeding and bee keeping. Mount
Elbrus, the highest point in Russia, is situated in the Kabardino-Balkarian Republic.
The republic is one of Russia’s main sky and mountain climbing regions.
