The Republic of Crimea is a constituent entity of the Russian Federation making part of the Southern Federal District. It is located on the Crimean Peninsula. Its
administrative center is Simferopol, founded in 1784. The Crimea has deposits
of iron ore, mineral salts and raw materials
needed to produce construction materials. The most important branches of
agriculture in the Republic of Crimea are grain production, animal husbandry,
winemaking, fruit farming, vegetable farming and production of ethereal oil
crops (lavender, rose, sage). The Crimea is famous for its grape varieties
which are used in the production of high-quality wine, cognac and juice. The mainstay
of the Crimean economy is tourism, the southern coast of the peninsula being one
of the most popular resorts for Russian tourists. The main waterway of the
peninsula is the North Crimean Canal. The Crimea is home to such nature
reserves as Yalta Nature Reserve, Cape Martyan Reserve, Karadag Nature Reserve and
sanctuaries, such as the bird sanctuary Astaninskie Plavni, the Ayu-Dag mountain,
the Grand Canyon, the Arabat sanctuary, the Kaczynski Canyon, Novyi Svit.
