The Stavropol Territoryis a
constituent entity of the Russian Federation making part of the North
Caucasus Federal District.
Federal District. It is located in the south of European Russia, in the
Fore-Caucasus. Its administrative center is Stavropol, founded in 1777. Natural
resources include oil, gas and rare-earth metals. The Stavropol Territory is one
of Russia’s main resort areas. The Caucasian Mineral Waters is a group of spa
resorts, which includes over 200 mineral springs with various chemical makeup, salinity,
and temperature. The largest industries in the Stavropol Territory are electric
power industry, food industry, chemical and petrochemical industries, machine
building and metalworking, fuel industry. The Stavropol Territory is one of Russia’s
most important agricultural regions. Agricultural sector specializes in the
cultivation of cereal (wheat, corn) and industrial (sugar beet, sunflowers, rape,
mustard) crops. Fruit growing and wine growing are also well-developed in the
region. Animal husbandry is represented by cattle farming involving raising
livestock for meat and dairy products, pig farming and poultry farming. The
Stavropol Territory is also traditionally known as the area of fine-wool
livestock sheep breeding.
