The Astrakhan Region is a constituent entity of the Russian Federation making part of the Southern
Federal District. Its administrative center is Astrakhan, founded in
1558. The region is gifted with such resources as natural gas, oil, salt (the Baskunchak
lake situated in the region is one of the largest salt lakes in the world), gypsum,
raw materials needed for production of glass and of construction materials. The
largest industries in the Astrakhan Region are fuel industry, food industry, machine
building and metalworking, electric power industry. Local industries are represented
by sheep breeding involving raising livestock for meat and fiber and cattle
farming involving raising livestock for meat and dairy products. Astrakhan is a
large transport hub of the south of Russia with its river port and the airport
of federal and international importance.
