The Volgograd Region is a constituent entity of the
Russian Federation making part of the Southern
Federal District. Its
administrative center is Volgograd, founded in 1589 as Tsaritsyn. The region has
deposits of oil, fuel gas, bischofite, phosphorites, salt, potassium salt,
mineral water, raw materials for construction materials. The northwest of the region
is rich in black soils. The largest industries in the Volgograd Region are fuel
industry, machine building and metalworking, chemical and petrochemical
industries, food industry. The Volgograd Region’s energy sector relies on the Volga
Hydroelectric Station. There is navigation in the Volga, Don, Akhtuba, Khopyor Rivers
and in the Volga-Don Canal. Stalingrad (now known as Volgograd) was completely
destroyed during the Battle of Stalingrad in World War II and later
reconstructed. Stalingrad was awarded the title ‘Hero City’ for its resistance.
Monuments have been constructed on the sights of the fierce battles in the
Volgograd Region. In 1963-1967, a memorial complex was designed by Yevgeny
Vuchetich and constructed on the Mamayev Kurgan in Volgograd.
