Cape Fligely is the northeastern point of Rudolf Island of Franz Josef Land, a Russian archipelago which is located in the Arctic Ocean and belongs to the Arkhangelsk Region. It is considered to be the northernmost point of Russia, Europe and Eurasia. The cape was named after the Austrian cartographer August von Fligely (1811—1879). It was discovered on April 12, 1874 by the crew of Tegetthoff, the main ship of the Austro-Hungarian North Pole Expedition lead by Julius von Payer and Karl Weyprecht. The first people to step on the Cape’s territory were the sailor Antonio Zaninovich, the midshipman Eduard Orel and the expedition’s leader Julius von Payer. In 2003, a 300-kilogram cross was installed on the cape.
