Big Diomede,
one of the Diomede Islands, is the easternmost point of Russia. In Russia it is
known as Ratmanov Island (named after the Russian navigator Makar Ratmanov). TheislandispartofChukotka Autonomous Area. It has no permanent population, but there
is a Russian border guard base. In 2005, a seven meters high Orthodox cross was
installed at the island’s peak. The cross can be seen from Alaska and from ships
passing the Bering Strait.
