The Caspian Depression is located on the East European Plain in Kazakhstan and Russia and surrounds the northern coast of the Caspian Sea. The Caspian Depression borders the Obshchy Syrt plateau to the north, the Volga Upland and the Ergeni Upland to the west, the Pre-Ural Plateau and the Ustyurt Plateau to the east. Caspian Depression is the lowest point of Russia. It occupies about 200,000 square kilometers. The depression is 149 meters above sea level, but its southern part is up to 28 meters below sea level. The northwestern part of the Caspian Depression which is surrounded by the Ergeni Upland, the Kuma–Manych Depression and the Volga is known as “Black Lands”. The Caspian Depression is a low-lying flatland, gently descending to the sea, with some elevations among which are the Mountains of Indersk, the Big Bogdo mountain and the Small Bogdo mountain. Among rivers which flow through the depression are the Volga, the Ural, the Emba, the Kura and the Terek rivers. Smaller rivers such as the Bolshoy Uzen, the Maly Uzen, the Uil and the Sagyz either dry up completely in the summer or turn into a network of small lakes such as the Kamysh-Samarskiye Lakes and the Sarpa Lakes. There are many salt lakes in the depression, such as Baskunchak, Elton, Inder, Botkul.
