The Orenburg Region is a constituent entity of the Russian Federation making part of the Volga Federal District. It
is situated in the foothill belt of the Southern Urals. Its administrative center
is Orenburg, founded in 1735. The region’s most important natural resource is
its soil, mostly black soils, which provides favorable conditions for
agriculture and all types of animal husbandry. The Orenburg Region is one of
Russia’s top ten regions in terms of grain and sunflower production. The region
is gifted with considerable deposits of natural gas, oil, non-ferrous and ferrous
metals (copper, zinc, nickel, cobalt). The largest industries in the Orenburg
Region are fuel industry, ferrous and non-ferrous metallurgy, electric power
industry, machine building and metalworking. The region is home to Orenburg Nature Reserve with its karst lakes.
