The federal constituent
entities comprising this federal district are situated both in the Urals (Republic of Bashkortostan, Udmurtian Republic,
Perm Territory, Orenburg Region and Kirov Region) and in the Central Russia
(Republic of Mordovia, Penza Region).
The Kirov Region although being a part of the Volga Federal District has close geographical,
historical and economic ties with the northwest of Russia. The district’s
territory makes 6.06% of the country’s territory. Thedistrictislandlocked. The population is mostly urban (71.59%), the
percentage of the urban population is, however, somewhat lower than the average
(74.15%). The Volga Federal District has the largest industrial production
share in the Russian economy (23.9%) which makes it the leading region followed
by the Central Federal District.
