The Penza Region is a constituent entity of the Russian Federation making part of the Volga Federal District. It is located in the southeast of European Russia. Its administrative center is Penza, founded in 1663. The region’s most
important natural resource is its soil, with the black soils percentage of 68%.
The region is not especially rich in mineral resources, but there are deposits
of peat, limestone, dolomite, chalk, sandstones, phosphorites, sands and clays.
There are some oil reserves. The largest industries in the Penza Region are machine
building and metalworking, food industry, electric power industry. Agriculture
specializes in the cultivation of wheat, rye, barley, oats, panicum, buck wheat,
sugar beet, sunflowers, cannabis and potatoes. Animal husbandry is represented
by cattle farming involving raising livestock for meat and dairy products. The region
is home to Privolzhsky Les Nature Reserve and the Akhuny resort.
