The Saratov Region is a constituent entity of the Russian Federation making part of the Volga Federal District. It is located in the southeast of European Russia, in the Lower Volga Region. Its administrative center is Saratov, founded in 1590. Deposits of oil and of raw materials needed to produce construction materials
(clay, sand and crushed stone) are being explored in the region. The largest
industries in the Saratov Region are fuel industry, machine building and
metalworking, chemical and petrochemical industries, food industry. Agriculture
specializes in crop farming. The region is home to Khvalynsky National Park. It
is also the homeland of famous writers Nikolay Chernyshevsky, Aleksey N.
Tolstoy, Lev Kassil and the artist Kuzma Petrov-Vodkin.
