The Sakhalin Region is a constituent entity of the Russian Federation making part of the Far Eastern Federal
District. It comprises the island of Sakhalin and the Kuril Islands in the
Russian Far East. Its administrative center is Yuzhno-Sakhalinsk, founded in
1882. The economy of the Sakhalin region relies on its enormous oil reserves. The
largest industries in the Sakhalin Region are fuel industry, food industry, electric
power industry. It is famous for being one of the main regions of fishing and fish
and seafood processing. Animal husbandry is represented by meat and dairy
farming. The Kuril Islands are susceptible to volcanic activity with over 100
volcanoes, some 40 of which are active.
