This federal district is situated in the Russian
Far East. It is the largest federal district in Russia. Most of the district’s constituent entities are coastal (apart from the
Amur Region, the Jewish Autonomous Region, the Trans-Baikal Territory and the Republic of Buryatia), one federal constituent entity (Sakhalin
Region) has no land borders with any other Russian federal constituent entity and
Russia’s mainland. The district distinguishes
itself by having land borders with the People’s Republic of China and the
Democratic People’s Republic of Korea, as well as maritime borders with Japan
and the United States of America. All types of Russian federal constituent
entities apart from cities of federal importance are represented in this
district, including the only autonomous region (Jewish Autonomous Region) and
the only autonomous area which was separated out of a region (Chukotka
Autonomous Area was formed when the Magadan Region was split). Far Eastern
Federal District is among two federal districts which have no cities with a
population over 1 million people.
