The Jewish Autonomous Region is a constituent entity of the Russian Federation making part of the Far
Eastern Federal District. It is located in the basin of the middle Amur River.
In the north and northwest are the Lesser Khingan mountains. The region’s administrative
center is Birobidzhan, founded in 1915. Forests cover over a third of the
region’s territory. The largest industries in the Jewish Autonomous Region are machine
building, woodworking industry, light industry, food industry. The main branches
of agriculture are meat and dairy industries, bee keeping, fishing and fur
trade. The Jewish Autonomous Region is crossed by the Trans-Siberian Railway.
